The Great Headphone Debate: Earbuds, Over-Ear, or Both?

One of the most underrated travel decisions is what kind of headphones to bring. It sounds simple until you’re standing in a noisy terminal, trying to hear an announcement, block out the person watching TikTok full volume, or sleep in a cramped airplane seat with something digging into the side of your head.

For me, the answer is usually: bring both.

Over-ear noise-canceling headphones are unbeatable in the airport. They create a little bubble of calm in the middle of travel chaos. If you’re working in the terminal, waiting through a delay, or trying to mentally escape from the crowd, a good pair of over-ear headphones can make a huge difference. The downside is obvious: they’re bulky. They take up space in your bag, and if you’re trying to sleep on a plane, they can be awkward unless you’re sitting perfectly upright.

Earbuds, on the other hand, are the ultimate convenience tool. They’re tiny, easy to grab, and much more comfortable if you want to lean against the window, put on an audiobook, or fall asleep during the flight. The tradeoff is that earbuds usually don’t match the full cocoon effect of larger noise-canceling headphones, especially in a loud airport or on a long layover. That being said, newer generations of noise-canceling earbuds are getting really, really good.

So my personal travel system is simple: over-ear headphones for maximum noise cancellation before boarding, and earbuds for the flight itself, especially when I want to sleep. It might sound excessive, but it gives me the best of both worlds.

And yes, this is where SCOTTeVEST comes in naturally. Normally, bringing both would feel like overpacking. But when your vest or jacket has pockets designed to carry real travel gear, the size issue largely disappears. Over-ear headphones, earbuds, charging cords, phone, wallet, passport, glasses, battery pack - everything has a place. You’re not digging through a backpack under the seat or doing the awkward “where did I put that?” routine while the person next to you silently judges you.

The real travel tip is not just “bring more stuff.” It’s bring the right stuff and organize it so well that it doesn’t slow you down. That has always been the SCOTTeVEST philosophy: pockets should reduce friction, not encourage chaos.

For your next trip, try this: wear your over-ear headphones in the terminal, keep your earbuds in an easy-access pocket for the flight, and store your cords and adapters in the same place every time. You’ll move faster, lose less, and travel calmer.

That’s the difference between packing gadgets and having a system.
