![]() The Story of The Greatest Ball Cap Ever: TEC Hat
One day, shortly after they were married, Scott came home with two baseball hats. They were still in the bag, as he wanted to confirm what he thought—the hats actually looked good on him. Well, he was right—they looked great! Laura tried them on and found that not only did they look great, they were the first ones she had ever seen where the clasp worked around a ponytail. The newlyweds began sharing the baseball hats and all was well... until Laura dropped and lost one in the parking lot of a Dead show. Now down to one very valuable cap, the two continued to share and began a search for a replacement hat. This search became more and more frustrating. For some reason, baseball hat designers starting emulating the look of train conductors and feed caps (for all you city folks, those are the ones advertising grain and such that farmers wear). The squared-off tops that protrude from your head and the plastic punch hole backs did nothing for Laura and Scott. Sharing one baseball cap was bad enough until near tragedy struck causing the search to intensify. Laura and Scott's friend, Gordon, came to Chicago for a visit. The Jordans took him on an architectural boat tour. As it was mid-Summer, Laura was wearing the baseball hat to try to tame her humidity-induced curls, when a gust of wind snatched it off of her head. As the hat was flying to its death in the Chicago River, Scott jumped and caught it! A close call for sure—Laura and Scott needed to find another hat. Years of frustrating—and futile—searching ensued, yet Laura and Scott were no closer to finding a baseball hat. By now, SCOTTeVEST® was in full force and they would occasionally joke about going into the hat business and making it themselves. Then, in the Summer of 2002, an event took place that forced their hand. Laura had the cap in her pack during an adventure race. Owing to some creative navigation, her team spent hours crawling through a swamp. The weird and incredibly itchy rash she and her teammates acquired was nothing compared to the true tragedy of the day the last remaining baseball cap was in shreds! Thus began a year of intensive design work on what was intended to be The Greatest Baseball Cap Ever! After years of searching, the Jordans knew what they wanted...and what they didn't want. Both were interested in fit and looks. Scott wanted to incorporate some of the must have TEC® features like pockets, ear loops, and wicking fabric in the band. Laura was insistent about the clasp working around a ponytail. Scott also wanted to solve the problem of his earbuds falling out when he listened to music during his runs. He designed some hidden loops (now patent pending!) and the problem was solved. So, after years of research it is finally here, TEC Hat™. We know you'll enjoy it!
